Automatic Transmission problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Astro 1

4l60e transmission sun gear on 2002 chevy Astro failed without warning, shred everything in transmission. Transmission shop says gm knew part was faulty but did not issue any recalls. There were no noticeable symptoms prior to failing. Fluid was flushed and changed less that a year before.

Automatic Transmission problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Astro 2

My ac failed to blow cold after I noted some oil (not motor oil) under the front passenger side of the vehicle. The dealership recharged the system which was apparently empty including dye for which I bore the cost ($200+). Less than 12 hrs later the system no longer blew cold and no fluid was noted under the vehicle. The vehicle was taken back to the dealership for inspection of the dye. The mechanic removed then interior engine hood and found that the ac line had rubbed against the transmission filler tube (now metal on metal). A hole the size of a dime to nickel was in the filler tube and the ac line also had a hole in it. I also have another 2k chevy Astro that was diag'd several years ago for the same hole in the ac line but it had not worn a hole in the transmission filler tube. The mechanic had indicated that the ac line was 'run that way from the factory'. At this point foreign matter has fallen into the transmission including the metal from the filler tube, the black foam cover on the ac line and apparently the freon from the dye recharge. I have to presume other foreign matter has made its way in to filler tube as well. I am now attempting the have gm cover the $1k repair to the ac line and transmission filler tube.

Automatic Transmission problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Astro 3

1999 Chevrolet Astro with 65000 miles. Towed a light trailer (1500 lbs) from colorado to kansas, about 500 miles. A couple of weeks later the transmission occasionally started shifting very hard from 1st to 2nd; once it started, it would continue to do so until the ignition was turned off. Odbii code p1870 set. Apparently the computer monitors slippage in the trans and if it thinks it's slipping too much it applies full line pressure to the shift. Hard on entire driveline and devastating to the trans - we're having to have it completely rebuilt although if we would have replaced the valve body when it first started it might have been okay.

Automatic Transmission problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Astro 4

Purchased used Astro van and noted on 2nd day when putting in reverse then to drive a loud clunk and hard jump forward unless you delay taking foot off brake or applying gas until you can feel the gear engage (approx. 5-10 seconds). This is dangerous when backing up, as I have almost been hit twice now. It needs to be fixed correctly or replaced.

Automatic Transmission problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Astro 5

On Tuesday , Dec. 30, 2003, while attempting to engage the drive on the automatic transmission of my year 2000 chevy Astro van, 2wd, the entire shift assembly crumbled in my hands as is it was a piece of candy. I took delivery of this vehicle on 7/20/2000 from bk chevy here in brooklyn, new york. The van doesn't even have 10,000 miles on it!!! it looks brand new on the outside. This is a manufacturer's defect that could have been fatal had the vehicle been in motion. Fortunately I was in park. . . And the shift assembly broke apart while the vehicle was in park. The vehicle was towed to bk chevy service center for repair. This is going to be an out-of-warranty repair and cost me a lot of money. I have asked for all the broken parts to be placed in the box the new parts came in and I am willing to ship the broken parts for testing to washington, DC. I await instructions.

Code 1870 is well documented on multiple web sites. The aluminum valve housing is too small and wears out quickly. The sympton is a very hard shift from 1-2 and 2-3 as if being rear-ended only after the vehicle is hot. Chevy has reengineered to a bigger valve but still wants it's customers to pay half of $2000 for a $350-$950 problem that should be covered by it's warrenty. Sonnex makes a steel replacement and can verify how frequent the problem is. Chevy's aluminum replacement is questionable, let alone the deal they offer.

Automatic Transmission problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Astro 10

The consumer stated that while driving the vehicles automatic transmission did not shift properly in second gear. The dealer inspected it several times when the vehicle was under warranty but could not duplicate or correct the problem.

Tranmission valve body bad. Trans. Shifts hard and when not expected.

Automatic Transmission problem of the 1997 Chevrolet Astro 15

The reverse shell in the transmission broke, dealer replaced the transmission, consumer was shocked that the warranty would not cover this failure and feels that Chevrolet should pay for 50 percent of the cost since the failure occurred at low mileage.

Automatic Transmission problem of the 1997 Chevrolet Astro 16

Transmission slammed into gear after accelerating and shifted into next gear. After, slamming into next gear , vehicle shook violently. Dealer stated vehicle was built with a inadequate transmission to hamdle weight of vehicle. Manufacturer dd not plan to solve problem.

Automatic Transmission problem of the 1997 Chevrolet Astro 17

After driving on interstate for awhile, the transmission shifted very harshly when pulling away from a toll booth sending my wife's and children's heads back sharply against their seats. The dealer says it will need to be rebuilt. Independent transmission shops state that this is a common problem with GMC transmissions and that it will eventually cease to function, possibly stranding the people in the van. After acknowledging this in several service bulletins, the gm garage still says that gm is not responsible for the repair cost of approx $2000.

Automatic Transmission problem of the 1997 Chevrolet Astro 18

My feeling on this vehicle is as follows: this is a relitively new Astro van, being only 4 years old, I wouldn't have expected to have to absorb the cost of a rebuilt trasmission already. After speaking with our trasmissions specialist, he advised we contact someone regarding this van. The problem with the trasmission was caused by 2 torque bearings that exploded within the transmission, thus causing the damage. He let me know that this is not a normal occurance in this vehicle, there had to be a flaw. Torque bearings just do not 'explode. ' the cost to remedy, what I feel is a manufacture defect, has caused a hardship for my family. I would appreciate any help with this matter.

Automatic Transmission problem of the 1998 Chevrolet Astro 19

The Chevrolet Astro shifts gears violently. The problem was first noticed as I left an intersection and the van violently shifted gears throwing my family's and my head back with extreme force. Thinking that I had been rear-ended and knowing that other cars were in front and alongside my vehicle, I quickly stepped on the brake, almost causing a true rear-end collision. The vehicle was not in warranty so I took it in for inspection by my local mechanic, who had previously worked as a service tech for a chevy dealership. He was unable to find the problem. He contacted one of his friends who still worked at the chevy dealership where he was formerly employed. My mechanic told me that his friend stated that the defect was known by Chevrolet but there wasn't any recall and there was nothing they would do about it. I paid a hefty price for what was supposed to be a great van only to find out that Chevrolet has manufactured a vehicle knowing that it has severe defects in the transmission that could cause costly repairs, injury, or possible crash-related deaths and refuse to remedy the situation. How many more people must continue to drive an unsafe vehicle beforecorrective action is taken?.

Automatic Transmission problem of the 1998 Chevrolet Astro 24

Repeated attempts to fix transmission beginning with a complete rebuild at a certified facility; transmission may function properly for as long as 2 months. Repeated visits to the transmission shop are met with apologies, and stories of the same design transmission with the same problems from other individuals. I at first suspected the mechanics, but research has shown there are many other Astro van owners experiencing the same problem; believe it to be a manufacturing defect.

Automatic Transmission problem of the 1997 Chevrolet Astro 25

After driving for 20-40 minutes, the transmission will shift very hard from first to second gear. We have reported this to the dealer and am told that it would cost $1800. 00 + to replace the transmission. We have had 3 transmission shops look at this problem and run diagnostics and tune up on the transmission. The problem still exists. We have been dealing with this aggravating situation the last two years, spoken with many people in the repair business and no one seems to be able to pinpoint the exact problem. They only want to 'look' at the problem and collect more money, which we have done on 3 seperate occasions. All to no avail. Problem still exists.

Automatic Transmission problem of the 1997 Chevrolet Astro 26

Aastro Transmission Tucson

After coming to a complete stop then accelerating, transmission shifts abruptly from 1st to 2nd gear. TSB's posted by gm on the transmission model 4l60-e. This transmission is used in several model trucks/vans/SUV's. Your site and other web sites post complaints on this unit from various truck owners, with the same problem. Gm refuses to participate in repairing these transmissions. Owners must pay for repairs/transmission replacements. If transmission were to suddenly go out while acclerating, vehicle would lose all power and could not avoid being struck by another vehicle, potentially causing injury and/or death of van occupants.

Automatic Transmission problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Astro 27

The transmission has a dangerous problem - when shifting from park to reverse it works normal - when shifting from neutral or drive to reverse it takes 3-5 seconds to engage - this is not evident in the other two cvevrolets that I own (one has the same transmission) - this is dangerous since if you are parking on a grade you release the brakes to back up it starts to roll foreward before the reverse engages - it is also kind of dangerous while making a u-turn since while waiting for reverse to engage another car can come flying toward you - then if you 'give it gas' too soon it spins and grabs suddenly making the car 'jerk'.

Automatic Transmission problem of the 1997 Chevrolet Astro 28

After driving at highway speed and coming to a stop there is a loud bang and the vehicle jerks at the upshift from first to second gear. It feels as if the vehicle has been hit from behind. Check out by transmission shop indicates no problem.
